As part of my next task for my media portfolio i have been asked to look at a number of thriller's opening scenes and describe the characteristics of each film, with the headings of; narrative structure, thriller codes and conventions, camerawork, mise-en-scene, sound, editing, grapyics.
In class we watched the film seven and made an analysis, here i will show under each pacific heading my anlysis- narrative structure, cinemotography, sound, mise-en-scene, editing and i will also conpare thriller codes and conventions with 'seven'
Narrative structure
The narritive structure of the film seven as you may well know is in cronological order; showing each new spacific day clearly to the viewer this is done with text appearing on the bottom of the screen being shown clearly to the viwer, and with each new day a cronological murder happens this being one of the seven deadly sins each time (this is why the film was given the title 'seven').As the film progresses the viewer becomes apparent that the each death then has a some what religious element behind it being that with each death that is commited the victim had followed that perticular sin.
Cinemotography
throughout Seven cinemotography features are seen, before the film was put into production the producer had to make some decisions about how the film was to be viewed and one decision he chose was that the fiml should involve the reader make them part of the action and to feel like they are there and not observing and the prodcuer creates this sence of feeling by perticuler camera placement. All through the film both mills and somerset are viewed at the same level showing that niether one is superior to the other. As i said previous that the prodcuer gives the impression the viwer is more involved in the film this can be more apparent when action scenes take place; as a chase is taking place the carema goes shakey this then gives a sence of building suspence and involvment. When any character is in control in Seven then are shown by the camera angled up at then as if we as the viewer looking up at the character co-insidently as John Doe is tied and kneeling on the floor the viewer is seen somthing different as for the one of the first times in the film couler and brightness is shown and this is behind John Doe giveing a sence that he is a 'martyr' and this maybe because he believes what he is doing is not nesaseraly wrong.
Sound
When the film starts the music as the opening credits appear seem to be some what eerie and hauting this gives the viwer at first glimps how the film may progress this then sets the seen for the rest of the film. To add the busy suroundings and atmosphere when new york city is shown all the viewer can hear is constant traffic, arguing, sirens adding the busy and movement life the film is trying to posses. In comparision to how the film is busy and there is alot of movement as we see in one of the scenes somerset is at home and he is listening to 'air on a g string' by 'Bach' and this maybe no trying to show how the film is in terms of emotions but informing the reader of Somersets interlect.
Mise-en-scene
Where mise-en-scene is concerned this opens up a mide range of converation as this involves everything and enything involved in the film, first of all the lighting, this in seven is very dark and dull- makes the film eere and scary. Partial vision is used in the film seven this not just on behalf of the decision made by the producer for the viewer to be involved but to build suspense upon the viewer. When we find about about the probs such as the guns of the officers it tells us alot baou the personalitly of that chararcter, as it is said in the film mills has drawn his gun a number of times and has killed someone telling us that he is not worried about conflict, as for somerset it says that he has drawn his gun once but never had the intention to fire it showing us that he is a more carefull officer.
Editing
For the editing on seven the on screen graphics at the start anre blurry/unfocused, rough/scratchy, this and the unfomfatable music gives a scary/eere setting for the film. The montage of scary/gory/creepy im ages shows and gives the presence of a 'crazy' character.
Thriller codes and conventions
Seven meets many of Martin Rubans opinions on the genre thriller such as it is set in a urban landscape and in this case it is New York city and it is an everyday enviroment. Seven definitly shows Pascal Bonitzers points on thriller with the audinece should only see so much and up untill around half way through the film does only then the audience see the actual killer and his enviroment. As Lars Ole Sarburg says that the audience should have somthing hidden from then in sevens case as the audience is involved it is not just them but other characters have things being hidden from them as well. Noel Carrol's point on creating questions is shown in seven where several times the auidence is left contemplating one thing or another. Unlike many of the codes and conventions suggest in seven there is no perticular hero; the audience believes that mills will become the hero but at the end he is fooled and murders the villian, therefore can he be classed as the hero? and that is probably one of the major questions the viewers are left with as the film ends.So as i have given a detailed anlysis i think that we can conferm that seven definitly meets the codes and conventions of a 'thriller' and even though not all the codes and conventions are seen in seven the ones that arnt out way the ones that arnt, and as i have explained in one of my previous bloggs there realy is no concrete thriller definition.
American Pyscho (2000)Narritive Structure-This perticular film is written in a diary form, this is first recognised when the main charecter is describing themselves and telling the viwers about there life and interpritations. Another point on the narrative structure in the opening scenes is that it is in linier form (written in chronological) so therefore no flash backs are seen.Thriller codes and conventionsFor Americal Pyscho some of the thriller codes that can be viewed are in the opening credits of the film where the viewer can see (what looks like) blood, and the images of a sharp knife, but in this incidence it turns out the (what looks like) blood is actually sauce, and the knife that looks as though some sort of muder could be commited with is for cutting meat.Camera Work
In AP there are a large amount of mirror shots in the opening, showing the charecter in different light, in his opinion this lets the viwer in the mind of the charecter. Also the viewer is only shown partial vision, so only as much as the director whats the viewer to see will.
Mise-En-Scene
The appearence of wealth can be seen a number of times in the opening, firstly with the smart clothes all the men are wearing (suits) and then the camrea is puposefully ained clealry at the credit cards being placed on the tray, another thing would be the contrast of physical attitude how the charecter acts very kind gives the inpression of a normal guy, but then we hear him speek and we are given an insight into his mind.
Sound
Eere music opens the music with un-rythmitical poundings of sound so then the viwer will be shocked to hear it, the melody progresses from a minor key to a mojor makeing it seem it is in the wrong place. Also as they are in the reseraunt, the music in the background gives the impression of intalect.
Editing
Editing has been done on the illusion of dripping blood within the openinig credits, also another thing would be the club to appartment change where these contrast one another greatly- the fake to real.
Graphics
The graphics in American physcho are simple and straight forward nothign complecated has been done to change the viwers vision in anyway, the only graphical illusion is the thought of dripping blood.
jaws
Narrative structure
Jaws was played in linear order, it followed a ground of teenagers having a beach party and a sing a long, then shows two of the teens going to the sea for a swim, where one of them ends up trying to fight of a shark.
Thriller Codes And Conventions
the film uses a technique known as portraction, this is where the viwer can see that the girl is in destress, and we know that she will die, the under water shots give the view we imagion the shark can see.
Camera Work
at the start of the film all is normal no odd or partial vision camera shots ahve been used to the prducers advantage, and it only changes what the girl can gone into the water and the viwer then can see visions of her from under the sea giving the feeling somthing is watching her and looking at her as pray.Mise-En-SceneJaws doesnt use anything extra ordinary within the making of the opeining scenes, everthing is normal looking and nothing is out of place, so that when the death does happen to the girl the audience realise that it odesnt matter who or what the person has or hasnt done anyone can be a victim and this then plays tricks within the mind of the viwer.SoundJaws has possibly the most well knows music out of all films across the globe, the movie theme that John Williams wrote in 1972 is one of the simpilist scores to wright and almost anyone could play it, but its how it is used wich mkaes it so amazing. and when they decide to use it gives a scary and progressive biuld up to somthing.EditingShots cut from the beach where all the teenagers are having a party to the deserted beach shore this could signify where they will be goin later on in the film.Silence Of The Lambsnarrative structureThe opening scenes of silence of the lambs uses linier form, it shows an fbi agent in a somewhat scary and dull forest on a obstical corse where she is then shouted and told to go to an office.Thriller codes and conventionsThe only thriller code that could be distinguished within the opening scenes could be she is running, the viewers may see this as she is runing away from somthing of someone.
Camera WorkThe camera tracks her as she runs on this what may be a fbi obstical corse as if we are a viwer, we then track her to the offiice she is requaired to got to, then we pan the wall where we can see evedenceMise-En-SceneThe props used in silence of the lambs are clever they dont give to much away at the beggining as we see her running and for that reason we dont know why, we then see her enter a lift full of men wich i coincidently all taller and bigger than her this may connotate that men overule her in her job and everyday lifeSoundThe panting of her breath as she runs shows a ruch within her and a sence of scare, but then we see what she is truely doin and we see the bigger picture.EditingThe editing within the film helps us to follow her every action as cuts are only used to show a sudden change in view and that she is changing her surroundings.GraphicsAs the film opens it shows the title 'silence of the lambs' this is written in a some what messy font and is in red connotatig blood and death (all things that are bad) but then the white may connatate purenes and hope. The shiningNarrative structureThe shining opens with the view over a lake which a lovely surrounind and the sun is shining, we the follow a car throuhg lon and windy roads untill we see a hotelThriller Codes And conventionsWithin the opening few scenes there is not many things that could interite that the film is a thriller, one thing though maybe the contrast of a beatuiful surrounding and the eerie minor music that is played and the unsettelin voice like noises tht are created.CameraworkThroughout the opeing of the film we have an ariel view of the moutins but the subject of the vision is the following of a perticular car and the aidience is not shown what who is in it.SoundThe music that is played along to the opeing of the credits is somthing that doesnt seem to fit what the audience see's they see a lovely landscape but then we have eere music and unsetteling voice like noises being played.Editingthe credits open very cleverly as they have no perticular craftyness about them, they are shown in average font and blue and roll from the bottom of the screen to the top, and this then gives nothing away the the auidence so they dont know what to expect.Bourne UltimatiumNarrative structureThe film opens in a busy city, where the character is clearly hurt, he is trying to get away from the police and this can be seen when he hears sirens he goes to the underground, he then heads for a pharmacy in aid of drugs to help him self where he is then confroted by (russian) police but he gets out, and nearly shooting a officer in the process.Thriller Codes And ConventionThe use of guns and blood that can be seen on his hands as he goes to wash them in the room he trys to heal himself in shows that he has come over some form of fight or narraly missed deathCamera WorkThe camera backs up the sounds by showing a busy atmoshpere when the camera shakes as we follow the character, aslo the camera uses qucick mivement letting the viewer know we dont know what is around each corner.Mise-En-SceneThe use of a gun shows that the character has authorly and oest mind what he has to do to protect himself, also when we see him ebter the pharmacy, we see him grap a number of drugs, and we see him injecting himself with some of them, this shows that he must be in much pain.
SoundIn the BU as we open with are given straight away the sence of urgancy, with the sound of sirens and the beeps of cars horns, we also have a pounding theme in the background to show and biuld susspence and to add the viewing pleasure.
EditingThroughout the opening the camera does quick cuts so show movement and sudden change, also at the very begining we see only the feet of the character and him waling in snow this then sets the surroundings and lets the audience know where he is and what he might come up against.
Graphics
At ome stage in the opeinig scenes we se the character having sudden flash backs the audience is shown this by how the camera has a couler tone change and a blurred effect is used to show the change in time.
